Known simply as the Main Library until 1994, the Sir Louis Matheson Library was opened in April 1964 by Sir John Eccles after its first stage was completed in October 1963.
Construction continued throughout the 1960s, with Stage 2 opened in 1969, followed by extensions in 1975 (Stage 3) and 1997 (Stage 4). In 2015-2017 the building underwent major refurbishments resulting in the look it still has today.
The Main Library was renamed the Sir Louis Matheson Library in 1999, after our first Vice-Chancellor who served from 1960-1976.
