Title [Chakra scroll]PublisherKashmir : publisher not identifiedDescriptionHand-scroll. Sanskrit manuscript on paper. Black Devanagari script. Illustrated with 15 miniatures, illuminated with detail in gold.
"Over two metres in length, with 15 miniatures heightened in gold, this Sanskrit manuscript shows the chakras of the human body. The manuscript begins with a miniature of Shiva united with Parvati on the 1000-petal lotus, representing the Sahasrara chakra at the crown of the skull. Proceeding downwards, miniatures show the Sarabha (a mythical beast created from the most vital parts of other animals); a black-petalled lotus; Shiva again united with Parvati, here atop their bull and tiger; Vishnuin union with Lakshmi, atop their bearer, the green-winged Garuda; the coiled snake (kundalini), representing the Maludhara chakra; the elephant-headed Ganesh with a consort, and the world resting atop a bull, the bull in turn atop Ananda the 1000-headed serpent, and finally the frog and fish on which the cosmos rests. The manuscript encapsulates cosmology on both the individual and grandest scales, showing both the Universe itself and the spiritual and physical interconnectedness of the human form. A very similar manuscript is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum" -- Antiquariat INLIBRIS Gilhofer Nfg. GmbHLanguageSanskrit
