TitleAda Booth Slavic CollectionDescriptionThe Ada Booth Slavic Collection was established in 2011, honouoring the wishes of the late
Ada Phyllis Booth (1921-2008), physicist and lecturer at The University of Melbourne. Ada
maintained a lifelong interest in Slavic Studies, left-wing politics and European history.
Ada’s generous gift has enabled the Library to build a world-leading Slavic language
collection that combines Slavic language materials, rare and unique items, and items from
Ada’s personal collection.
The items held in the Ada Booth Slavic Collection are a select representation of Slavic,
Eastern European and Eurasian Studies. Reflecting research which has been undertaken at
Monash University, the main subject areas covered by the collection are Ukrainian,
Russian and other Slavic literatures and Slavic linguistics. Ada Booth is home to the
leading collection of materials in Australia pertaining to Ukrainian Studies both in Ukrainian
and English.
Other strengths of the collection include Russian/Soviet studies, history of Eastern
Europe, as well as politics and art. Current collection priorities are modern and
contemporary literature, history, politics, international relations, social studies and arts.
A strong focus in collection development is on Slavic Australiana: migrant and diaspora
literature and culture.
