Edmund Henry Lenthal Swifte crossed Bass Strait and made his way to Ballarat in 1864. A farmer, financier and mine manager in Ballarat, Edmund was a founding member of the Australian Natives' Association, established to provide health benefits for native born Australians among other functions.The diary has an illustration of a coat of arms titled, "Stultos sperno tacens sed vigilax." Includes presentation inscription on title page: "EHL. Swifte a present from Simon Cadden." Simon Cadden was Edmund's brother in law. Contains several inscriptions in Pitman shorthand.LanguageEnglish
