Biography

Professor Andrew was appointed Foundation Dean of Medicine by the Interim Council in October 1960. Professor Andrew graduated MB BS (1935) and MD (1940) from the University of Melbourne. His previous appointments included Acting Superintendent, Children's Hospital, Perth, 1939: Honorary Physician to Out-patients, 1946-57, and to In-patients, 1957- at the Alfred Hospital; Visiting Medical Specialist, Repatriation Hospital Heidelberg, 1947-56; and Sub-Dean, 1956 and Dean, 1957-60, at the Alfred Hospital.

At the time of his appointment he was a member of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Melbourne; a member of the research Advisory Committee of the Alfred Hospital; a trustee of the Baker Medical Institute; and a foundation member of the Interim Council of Monash University. Professor Andrew's research interests had been in experimental physiology of gastrointestinal diseases. Professor Andrew retired from Monash in December 1976 and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in the same year. He died in February 1994. 

Other positions held by Professor Andrew over the years included Chairman of the Australian-American Education Foundation, 1970-76; Council member at Australian National University (1974-77); Head of Postgraduate Studies at St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Hospital, 1977-83; Vice-President of the Baker Medical Research Institute, 1981-83 (Board member 1960-87); and from 1987 Chairman of Friends of Monash University Gallery.

Published (1941-93) and unpublished (1962-92) addresses and reports. Unpublished work includes addresses, lectures, reports and submissions, together with papers written but not submitted for publication.

Dean's Department files 1961-1990

Dean's Department files retained by Prof. Andrew after leaving Monash in 1976. Files contain numbered and indexed copies of reports, seminar papers, circulars, and memos. Three files of Faculty correspondence (1960-1965) are included, and correspondence postdating Prof. Andrew's Monash appointment. 

Subject files 1961-1993

Miscellaneous files transferred at various times since 1984. Files contain a variety of material including correspondence, addresses, journal articles and newspaper cuttings. Majority of file contents date subsequent to Prof. Andrew's employment at Monash and reflect his involvement with other organisations and his wide range of interests.
