Biography
Professor Alan John Marshall was appointed to the Chair of Zoology and Comparative Physiology in December 1959 and took up the position in July 1960. He was the second professor appointed after the university's establishment. Professor Marshall came to Monash from St. Bartholomew's Medical College in the University of London, where he was a reader in Zoology and Comparative Anatomy. Prior to that he had lectured in the United States and been a demonstrator at Oxford. Professor Marshall established a department with a high international reputation and in recognition of his contribution to the university, the fauna reserve on campus was named the 'Jock Marshall' Zoology Reserve. He died on 20 July 1967 after a long illness.
