Entity titleAffiliation CommitteeEntity identifier28Entity typeAgencyDate range1967 - 2014DescriptionIn 1966 the University Council set up a committee to review the legislation on affiliation. That committee instigated the preparation of a statute on affiliation and recommended the establishment of a standing committee of Council to deal with affiliation matters. The Affiliation Committee held its first meeting in June 1967 to deal with the affiliation to the university of Mannix College. Membership comprised the Vice-Chancellor, two members of Council, two nominees of the Professorial Board, one elected member of the non-professorial teaching staff and one elected student. Under statute 10.1 of the Monash University Act the committee was to - consider all applications received for affiliation, the continuation of any affiliation and all other matters related to affiliation; and to make recommendations thereon to Council.
The committee met frequently in its early years especially in relation to the affiliation of hospitals but was called upon less frequently once the University was established. New affiliation agreements and amendments to existing agreements are subject to consultation between the University Solicitor and appropriate boards and committees before being submitted to the Affiliation Committee for submission to Council. Routine matters are often dealt with without formal meetings. The continuing existence of the committee is necessary 1) as a check on documents before they reach the final stage of acceptance by Council and 2) as a standing body to be called into action in event of any new or special need. The committee has dealt with the affiliation of educational and research institutions, hospitals, and in more recent years bodies such as the Museum of Victoria and the Victorian State Opera.
In 1997 as part of a review of Council, the Affiliation Committee was made a standing committee of the Academic Board, but it was not re-constituted until 2004 (AB 6/2004). The committee subsequently met on an as needed basis. It was disestablished in 2014.
