Entity titleTraffic CommitteeEntity identifier36Entity typeAgencyDate range1976 - 1979DescriptionThe Traffic Committee was a small ad hoc working group convened by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Leo West in 1976 to address concerns about traffic safety in and around the University grounds, and in particular, the control of speeding vehicles. The committee was to meet as and when required. Membership consisted of Professor West; Mr K. Grace, the University Engineer; and Mr W. Barker, the Safety Officer.
The idea for such a group arose from previous communications between Professor West and the Road Safety and Traffic Authority (who had overall control in traffic and safety matters) on ways to deal with traffic control over such a wide area. The committee’s terms of reference were:
1. To continuously review all aspects relating to vehicular and pedestrian traffic which relate to Monash University
2. To initiate action where necessary to improve the safety and convenience of all areas of roads and pathways within the University
3. To maintain liaison where necessary with Safety, Parking and Housing and Transport Committees, Road Safety and Traffic Authority, local councils, and any other state or local authorities concerned with road or traffic matters concerning all matters of road safety and traffic movement.
The committee met twice in 1976 and in 1977 reported to Council on the University road system and modifications to curtail speeding vehicles. Traffic matters continued to be referred to Professor West and Mr Grace although no further meetings of the committee appear to have been held. In 1979 Professor West undertook a review of the safety management structure of the University and found that the Safety and Parking Committees and the ad hoc Traffic Committee had all been involved in safety matters. The review recommended the formation of a group with special expertise, a Traffic Safety Advisory Committee, which would deal with traffic problems as identified by the Parking or Safety Committees.
