Entity titleUniversity Counselling CommitteeEntity identifier69Entity typeAgencyDate range1980 - 1990DescriptionThe Student Counselling Committee held its first meeting in December 1975. The committee was established on the recommendation of the Council Committee on Student Services appointed to advise Council on policies to be followed by the Counselling Service, the Careers and Appointments Office and the University Health Service. Its recommendations included the appointment of a small supervisory committee of the Professorial Board for each of the three services.
The Student Counselling Committee was to meet only once or twice a year and membership consisted of a professor as chairman, two members of the academic staff, a student nominated by the Monash Association of Students, and the Academic Registrar. The Officer-in-Charge of Student Counselling and the chairman of the Student Welfare Action Board were also entitled to attend meetings.
Terms of reference were:
to consult with and advise the Officer-in-Charge of Student Counselling upon all matters of policy relating to the service, to make recommendations to the Professorial Board, and on behalf of the Officer-in-Charge to submit an annual report to the Council through the Professorial Board and an annual budget proposal to the Committee of Deans.
In July 1980 the service’s name was changed to the University Counselling Service in recognition of the fact that a significant number of its clients were staff or parents of students. The committee became the University Counselling Committee. In 1987 it was restructured to include a representative from each faculty. The committee continued to provide support for the initiatives of the service and a link between the service and the faculties until 1990 when the proposed merger with Chisholm Institute of Technology brought into question the need for such a committee. Although it has never formally been disbanded the committee has not met since 14 September 1990.
