Entity titleStanding Committee for the Centre for Continuing EducationEntity identifier72Entity typeAgencyDate range1972 - 1989DescriptionIn 1972 an ad hoc committee of the Professorial Board recommended the establishment of a Centre for Continuing Education. At meeting 8/72 of the Professorial Board the Committee for the Centre for Continuing Education was appointed as a standing committee of the board and as the selection committee for the director of the Centre. The standing committee was initially composed of members of the former ad hoc committee. During 1974 it was restructured on a more formal basis. One member was appointed from each faculty and the Vice-Chancellor and the Director of HEARU became ex officio members. Terms of reference were clarified as:
1. to assist the director of the centre to identify areas of political, social, cultural, scientific, technical or economic concern capable of development through seminars, conferences, lecture series or other forms of educational activity
2. to assist ... in matters of policy and in any other matters on which [the director] may seek guidance
3. to assist ... work in continuing education for the professions in the context of “lifelong education” and the design of resources for adult training
4. to make recommendations to the Professorial Board on the policy and development of the centre including the improvement of its activities and services
5. ... to encourage deans, chairmen of departments and other academic staff to use the administrative and organisational facilities of the centre in mounting refresher and other non-degree programs in their areas
6. to assess the budgetary and staffing needs of the centre and make recommendations on them
7. to advise the director in his investigation of the possibility of making use of radio (and possibly television) broadcasting for the centre
8. to advise the Professorial Board on such matters in continuing education and related fields.
In 1988 a review of standing committees of the Professorial Board recommended the continuation of the standing committee with its terms of reference unaltered. However the following year an Enquiry into the University’s Role in Adult and Continuing Education (the Darvall Committee) recommended replacement of the Centre for Continuing Education by an Office of Continuing Education reporting directly to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). The final meeting of the standing committee was held on 1 December 1989. Both the standing committee and the centre ceased to exist on 31 December 1989.
