Entity titleCommittee on the Ultimate Size of the UniversityEntity identifier73Entity typeAgencyDate range1962 - 1967DescriptionIn 1962, in response to pressures to increase student intake, a Committee on the Ultimate Size of the University was appointed by Council to investigate the maximum desirable number of students that Monash might accommodate. The committee consisted of the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor, Professors R. R. Andrew and D. Cochrane, Messrs. R. Cowan and A. McDonell and Dr A. G. Serle. The committee met in October 1962 and September 1963.
A similar committee composed of Professors R. R. Andrew, S. R. Davis and K. C. Westfold and Dr A. G. Serle was appointed by the Professorial Board and met in August 1963. The two committees, later united by resolution of Council, met jointly in November 1963 and again in May 1964, to consider the problems which might arise from a too rapidly accelerated expansion program. The joint committee reported to Council in June 1964, advising that the more immediate growth problems should be investigated before recommendations could be made on the ultimate size of the University.
The joint committee was reconvened in May 1967 to undertake a new study on the growth and optimum size of the University for the University’s submission to the Australian Universities Commission for the 1970-72 triennium. The table of current and projected student numbers included in the committee’s report was also forwarded to the Premier of Victoria in support of proposals for a fourth university.
