Entity titleHonorary Degrees CommitteeEntity identifier80Entity typeAgencyDate range1965 - DescriptionThe Honorary Degrees Committee is a joint committee of Council and Academic Board and was established in 1965 on the recommendation of an advisory group of Council set up to consider and make recommendations on policies and procedures involved in the conferment of honorary degrees. Honorary degrees are conferred to honour and to associate with the university distinguished scholars and other persons distinguished by exceptional service in any field of activity.
The committee was originally constituted with three members of Council and three members of the Professorial Board with the Vice-Chancellor ex officio. Membership was later enlarged to include four members from each body (Council 9/72). The Honorary Degrees Committee meets annually to consider proposals received from any two members of Council or two professors. Recommendations are made to Council only when the committee is unanimous.
