Entity titleEducation CommitteeEntity identifier106Entity typeAgencyDate range1993 - 2012DescriptionThe Education Committee was created as a Standing Committee of the Academic Board in 1993 to ensure coherence and consistency in the university's undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The committee's terms of reference were to advise the board on "the establishment of new courses and alterations to existing courses .. with particular reference to titles, objectives, evaluation, student assessment, teaching arrangements and resource implications".
The committee held its first meeting in December 1993. Membership included the Senior DVC, Chairman of the PhD and Scholarships Committee, representatives of each faculty, the Director of Student Services, 2 undergraduate representatives, and up to 3 co-opted members. Papers are submitted to the committee by faculty boards, the committee in turn submits papers and recommendations to the Academic Board. The committee was reviewed in 2002 and its terms of reference amended in 2003 to include a wider range of academic matters including review and monitoring of the Learning & Teaching Plan; and advising on quality, and teaching and learning related issues.
In 2006 the committees terms of reference were amended (EC1/06 item 4.1) and a number of new sub-committees were created - the Learning, Teaching and Quality Committee, the Educational Policy and Programs Committee, and the Exclusion Appeals Committee (which previously reported to Academic Board). The committee's terms of reference and membership were amended again after a review in 2009, and it was given the power to establish and disestablish its own sub-committees. At that time the following sub-committees were approved to report via the Education Committee - Education Policy Committee, Learning and Teaching Committee, Coursework Scholarships and Admissions Committee, Gippsland Board of Studies, Campus Education Committee Sunway and Board of Studies South Africa.
Education Committee was disestablished in November 2012. It was replaced by new Coursework Admissions and Programs, and Learning and Teaching committees, with effect from 1 Feb. 2013 (AB 7/2012).
