C. Westfold was elected its first President. The objects of the Association included developing the academic standards and traditions of the university; informing public opinion on the functions and development of the university in relation to the community; protecting the freedom and independence of teaching and research; and generally concerning itself with "all matters affecting the welfare, activities and interests of the university and its staff".
The affairs of the association were administered by an elected committee of 10 members. Ordinary General Meetings were held in the first and third terms and an Annual General Meetings in July each year. In October 1989 SAMU merged with the Federation of Australian University Staff Associations (Monash University Branch) to became SAMU: FAUSA Branch. In 1993 FAUSA merged with other tertiary education unions to form the National Tertiary Education Union - NTEU.
