Entity titleChurches Collegiate Community Advisory CommitteeEntity identifier116Entity typeAgencyDate range1964 - 1968DescriptionIn 1964 a trust was formed by the Archbishop of Melbourne Frank Woods to acquire land in Blackburn Road to be developed as an inter-church project providing accommodation for Monash students. An advisory committee consisting of representatives of Monash, and of Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches was appointed by the trust early in 1965 to plan the development, known variously as the University Students Centre, Churches Residential Project and later the Churches Collegiate Community. A submission, including preliminary plans by the firm of Chancellor and Patrick Architects, was made to the Australian Universities Commission in December 1965.
By 1968 the difficulties associated with operating an affiliated rather than a university-owned college had become apparent and the committee decided not to proceed with the building of the Collegiate Community. The land was subsequently purchased by Monash (in 1969) with a view to extending its own residential colleges.
