C. Westfold was appointed in November 1960. In 1965 Professor Westfold was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Science and Professor G. B. Preston succeeded him as Chairman of the department of Mathematics (to Dec.1967). The chairmanship of the department at that time rotated at three year intervals, and since 1970 at two year intervals. The Mathematics building was completed in 1970.
By 1965 the department was divided internally into separate pure mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematical statistics sections. Members of the university's Computer Centre were also regarded as staff of the Mathematics department.
In 1998, the Department's name was changed to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and its activities expanded to include the Caulfield Campus and in 2002, following a restructure of the Science Faculty, it was renamed the School of Mathematical Sciences, which broadly groups its research program into three main areas: Applied and Computational Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Stochastic Processes.
