It was made up of the former Information Office (which became the Public Affairs Office) and the Publishing and Advertising Office. The Office was renamed several times before becoming University Marketing and Development in 1997. Marketing and Development comprised International Alumni and Development, Marketing Services and Public Relations, Monash Alumni Association, the Office for Prospective Students, and Publishing and Design.
In March 1999 with the departure of its director, University Marketing and Development was combined with the division of Performing and Visual Arts to form a new Public Affairs Division. As part of this restructure Publishing and Design was transferred to the Facilities and Services Division, while the internal communications function moved to Personnel Services Division. The new director reports through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Public Affairs). [Monash Memo 24 March 1999]
In 2021, Student Recruitment and Admissions and Strategic Marketing and Communications merged to form University Marketing, Admissions and Communications (UMAC).
