Biography
Foundation Chair of Organic Chemistry 1966-1985. John Swan was born in 1924. He obtained a Diploma of Applied Chemistry from the Royal Melbourne Technical College (RMIT), a Bachelor of Science and a Doctor of Science from the University of Melbourne. He graduated with a PhD from the University of London. He was a laboratory chemist with ICIANZ (ICI Australia) 1941-44, Research Scientist at CSIRO 1949-65. He was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor 1971-1975, Dean of Faculty of Science 1976-1984. He was Director of the ANZAAS Festival of Science held at Monash in 1985. He was elected as a fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1970. He was Chairman of the Australian Marine Sciences & Technologies Advisory Committee, 1981-84. He retired from Monash in 1995. He was Chairman of the Board of Management of CRC for Southern Hemisphere Meteorology 1994-2000, and Member of Westernport Region Water Authority 1993-2000.
