Biography
William Travers Charles was born 10 December 1908 in Kew, Victoria. He was educated at Essendon State School 1915-1918, St. Thomas Church of England Grammar School 1919-1925 and at the University of Melbourne 1926-1930 where he received a BA in History and Political Science and an LL.B. He was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor in Victoria in 1932 and practised as a barrister-at-law 1932-1939. He was a commissioned officer in military service 1940-1946 including service as judge advocate in Palestine. In the Reserve of Officers he had the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel 1946-1963 and served in Her Majesty's Colonial Legal Service (Overseas Judiciary since 1954). He served in British Solomon Islands, Hong Kong, Western Nigeria and Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) 1946-1965. In 1966 W.T. Charles was appointed as Special Lecturer in Law at Monash University for three years, and this appointment was extended until his retirement in December 1975. He then accepted an appointment as part-time tutor. He was conferred the title of Fellow of the Faculty of Law in 1976 and re-appointed until 30 June 1981. W.T. Charles died in January 1990.
