Terms of reference were to consider: the most appropriate structure for research; advise the Vice-Chancellor as to whether a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) should be appointed; ways whereby research can be made possible for those who have the potential but not the opportunities; ways whereby the needs of individual researchers can be met as well as those working in large groups; the continuation of the University-CSIRO research exercise, postgraduate grants-in-aid, and the research travel fund; a strategic approach to research in the university; ways in which Monash can maximise its share of "research clawback"; the establishment of a school of graduate studies to be administered by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research); any other matter relating to research.
The committee was Chaired by Professor L. Waller and membership included nominees of Academic Board, Committee of Deans and the Monash Postgraduate Student Association. The committee met for the first time in September 1991 and for last time in April 1992. It consulted widely throughout the university, invited submissions from interested groups, and presented its report to Academic Board.
