Strong concerns expressed by the Head and staff of the Department led the acting Vice-Chancellor to establish an ad hoc committee to review the decision. The committee was made up of Professors Hay, Pargetter and Snedden, two members of the former Academic Programs and Structures Working Party and two outside specialists in the field. The committee met during September 1990 and made its recommendation to the Council meeting of 24 September 1990.
