The department's first Chairman, Professor B. E. Hobbs, having taken up his appointment as foundation Professor of Geology in September 1972. Professor Hobbs continued as Chairman until 1984, and was replaced in 1986 by Professor G. S. Lister.

In July 2014, the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment was formed, bringing together the former School of Geosciences (Faculty of Science), atmospheric science (School of Mathematics) and physical geography (Faculty of Arts).
