The institute assumed responsibility for diploma and sub-tertiary courses previously offered by Yallourn Technical College. Teaching commenced in 1970, and the institute moved to the Churchill campus in 1972. It offered its first degree and distance education programs in 1974 and was designated as a state wide provider of distance education by the Victorian Government.
In 1988 in response to the Green Paper on Higher Education, the Council of the Gippsland Institute recommended affiliation with Monash University. The institute was dissolved under the terms of the Monash University (Chisholm and Gippsland) Act 1990, and became Monash University College Gippsland on 1 July 1990.
