The committee was to rationalise and facilitate procedures for selection of applicants seeking admission. Deakin University was incorporated into the group in 1979 and the committee was later expanded to include colleges of advanced education. The committee was funded by participating institutions and staff were employed by Monash and permanently seconded to the committee. Under a new agreement between the four universities and the Victorian Conference of Principles of Colleges of Advanced Education, which came into effect on 1 July 1986, the committee was renamed the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre. The inaugural meeting of its Executive committee was held on 1 August 1986.
