The Advisory Council superseded the former GIAE Council and held its first meeting on 12 June 1990. Membership consisted of the Chief Executive Officer of the College; the university's Vice-Chancellor; one nominee of the University Council; four members of the College staff; two students; the Chair of the Academic Board; and ten members appointed by the university Council with links with Gippsland. The Advisory Council became responsible for allocating the operating budget of the college; determining the staff establishment; and establishing such schools, boards of studies or other units of college government as required.
The Campus Advisory Council replaced the former MUCG Council following full integration of MUCG with Monash University in 1993. The Council was established under Statute 2.13 - Special Provisions for the Governance of Monash University (Gippsland Campus). Membership consisted of the Campus CEO, Vice-Chancellor; 11 representatives of the University Council; 4 members elected by staff; 2 student representatives; one graduate of the college; and 2 Heads of Schools. The function of the Council is to maintain an overview of campus activities; to make proposals on development and opportunities at the Gippsland Campus; to advance the work of the university in the Gippsland region; and to foster links with the regional community.
Gippsland Campus became part of Federation University in 2014.
