The main object of the trust is 'to perpetuate and honour the memory of Sir Winston Churchill by the award of memorial fellowships known as "Churchill Fellowships". The trust's aim is to reward proven achievement with further opportunity in the pursuit of excellence for the enrichment of Australian society.
The trust provides financial support to enable Australians to "undertake overseas study, or an investigative project, of a kind that is not fully available in Australia". The main criteria for the selection of fellows is past achievement or 'demonstrated ability for future achievement'. Other factors include the value of the applicant's work to the community and the level of enhancement expected to be achieved by the applicants overseas project.
The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust (WCMT) Victorian Regional Committee is the Victorian selection committee for the WCMT. Professor R.L Martin was the Chairman of the Committee from 1983-92. Monash University has provided the Secretary to the Committee since 1986. Applications for the Churchill Fellowships are submitted at the end of each year and the short lists for the Victorian candidates are forwarded for consideration by the Trust's National Fellowship Committee. The Board of Directors announce the Churchill Fellowships tenable during the next year after June. The trust awards about 100 Fellowships annually.
