Entity titleUnion BoardEntity identifier275Entity typeAgencyDate range1961 - 1998DescriptionThe Monash University Union was an association responsible to Council comprising "students, graduates, staff and such other persons as are approved by the Union Board"
The objects of the Union were:
1) to create opportunities for participation in non-academic activities by and between students, graduates and staff,
2) to provide facilities for members of the Union,
3) to provide catering and commercial facilities including premises for such use as the Union Board shall approve.
The Union Board had general superintendence of the affairs and concerns of the Union. It was to advise Council on Union matters, control the finance and property of the Union, approve the constitutions of the Clubs and Societies and the Sports Association. The Chief executive of the Union Board was the Warden of the Union.
Standing Committees of the Union Board were:
Union Finance Committee
Union catering Committee
Union House Committee
Union Staff Committee
In 1994 following the introduction of state government legislation for "voluntary student unionism", the student associations were separated from the Union. Union Board membership was increased with the majority of the Board to be drawn from the new Monash Student Association, and the Chairperson elected by the Board. A Union Executive Committee was established to take over the functions of many of the former Union committees, and a system of user groups established to enable students and staff to have input into the delivery of Union services.
In 1997 the University Union was restructured to split union responsibilities between the Monash Student Association and Monash Merchandising Company P/L, with Monash Merchandising to operate the commercial activities of the Union.
