In 1988 the Institute was provided with Commonwealth government assistance in the form of a grant from the National Public Sector Management Study Fund. The aims of the Institute were "to conduct research into public sector management with the aim of improving efficiency and effectiveness and conduct research into economic policy issues involving the public sector and to promote community discussion and awareness of those issues". After government funding for the Institute ceased in 1994, the PSMI was retained as the short course and consultation arm of the new Graduate School of Business and Government into which the Graduate School of Management had been subsumed.
The Director of the Centre was Professor Alan Fels, and Executive Director, Professor W. Russell. ??
