The Board's first meeting was held on 28 March 1991. Its terms of reference specified that it "should have regard to the overall governance of the theatres, the development of policy, programs and business plans for them; and the development of commercial sponsorship opportunities both for their ongoing operations and for any special projects, which they may develop from time to time". The Board of Management had two Executive Committees, one for the Alexander Theatre and one for the George Jenkins Theatre at Peninsula Campus.
Following a review of the "overall management philosophies and techniques for the Performing Arts Precinct" in 1994, the functions of the Board of Management for University Theatres were merged with those of the Performing and Creative Arts Committee.
