Oliverius was appointed in 1969 and became the chairman of the newly created department of Russian in 1969/70. Professor Oliverius was replaced as chairman by Professor G. J. Marvan in 1973, and the department was renamed Slavic Languages with the introduction of Czech in 1982. In 1989 the department was again renamed to include German Studies and Professor Marvan was replaced as head of department by Professor of German P. J. Thompson in 1992. In 2000 German Studies and Slavic Studies became separate departments within the new School of European Languages & Cultures, and then within the School of Languages Cultures & Linguistics.
Slavic Studies ceased to exist from 2015.
