Entity titleJoint Committee for Tertiary Jewish StudiesEntity identifier295Entity typeAgencyDate range1981 - 2002DescriptionEstablished in Melbourne in 1981, the committee's aim was to further Jewish studies at a tertiary level. The initiative stemmed from the International Centre for the University Teaching of Jewish Civilization which had recently been established in Jerusalem. Mr Arnold Bloch was approached to set up the committee and Mr Israel Kipen and Professor Louis Waller invited to serve on it.
By 1983 the committee was funding courses at the University of Melbourne and Prahran College. In 1986 following the death of Arnold Bloch, Mr Kipen took over as Chairman of the committee and in the same year the University of Melbourne established a lectureship in Jewish History with funding from the committee. The committee was also involved in the establishment of the Australian Centre for Jewish Civilization at Monash University in 1992. The Joint Committee will be wound up following the setting up of a trust to support the work of the Monash centre.
