Biography
Alan Holgate was born in Chesterfield, England in 1937. He obtained a B Sc (Eng) and prior to working at Monash was employed with the NSW Dept of Main Roads (1958-1960): with Marples Ridgway and Partners, London (1960-1961); as a site engineer on the Eucumbene-Snowy tunnel (1961-1963); and with the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Authority (1963-1965). Holgate was appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Civil Engineering in 1965 and took up his appointment in 1966. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1972 and Associate Professor in 1994. Associate Professor Holgate retired in 1996.

The research resulted in various reports and papers for engineering and historical journals, and working drafts and final copies of these publications are included with the collection. Copies of the major related work "Monash Bridges: Typology Study Reinforced concrete bridges in Victoria 1897-1917" by L. Alves, A. Holgate and G. Taplin are also included.
