Biography
Alan Marne McBriar was born in Bairnsdale on 25 July 1918. He graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1942 with first class honours from the University of Melbourne. In 1949 he was awarded D.Phil from the University of Oxford, where he went to Balliol and Nuffield Colleges. He was Lecturer (1943-45), Senior Lecturer (1949-62) and Reader (1963-65) in History at the University of Melbourne, then took up the position of third Chair of History at Monash in 1966. Professor McBriar served as Chairman of the Department of History for two periods, 1967-68 and 1980.
He retired from Monash in December 1983 and was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor. He died in 2004. The Alan McBriar Prize is awarded annually for the best history essay written by a second-year student. Professor McBriar was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia in 1974. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His research was in British history of the period 1880-1918, with his major works being 'Fabian Socialism and English Politics 1884-1918' (1962) and 'An Edwardian Mixed Doubles: The Bosanquets versus the Webbs: A Study in British Social Policy 1890-1919' (1987). He also edited the journal Historical Studies Australia and New Zealand (MUP) between 1949-55.
