He worked as a teacher at Shepparton Technical School in 1955, Shepparton High School 1956-57, then at Melbourne Secondary Teachers' College as an Assistant then Lecturer from 1958-1963. He moved to the University of Queensland and was Lecturer in Education from 1964-1966.
Dr Lawry was employed at Monash as a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education from 1967 to 1973. He was also foundation Warden of Roberts Hall from 1970 to 1973.
In 1974 Dr Lawry became the Dean of Education, in the School of Education at Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education.
