The new faculty was made up of the former Chisholm School of Computing and Information Systems and Department of Robotics and Digital Technology; and the Clayton department of Information Systems (formerly part of the Faculty of Economics, Commerce and Management). In 1992 a School of Computing and Information Technology was established on the Frankston campus, and in 1993 the Gippsland School of Computing (formerly part of the School of Applied Science) was also included within the faculty, following the full merger with MUCG. The faculty was renamed in January 1998.
Initial departments of the faculty: Business Systems, Computer Science, Computer Technology, Robotics and Digital Technology, Information Systems, Software Developments. Librarianship, Archives and Records was added in 1997. A School of Information Technology was opened in Malaysia in 1998; courses also commenced on the Berwick campus in 1998; and the School of Multimedia Systems was established at Berwick in 2001.
The faculty was restructured in 1997 into three Schools:- School of Business Systems, School of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE), and the School of Information Management Systems (SIMS).
Restructured again in 2005 into Caulfield School of Information Technology and Clayton School of Information Technology.
As of 2021, there is no longer a campus-based school system, but it is unclear when exactly this restructure happened. Currently three departments: the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence; the Department of Software Systems and Cybersecurity; and the Department of Human-Centred Computing.
