Dr Finlayson was born in 1943. He completed his B Sc at the University of Queensland in 1965 and his PhD at Monash in 1969. He then held a research fellow position on the Central Electricity Generating Board (England) from February 1969 - 1972. He was appointed as a Senior Teaching Fellow within the Department of Physics at Monash in February 1972 and was promoted to the position of Lecturer on the 1st January 1973. On 1.1.79 Dr Finlayson was promoted to Senior Lecturer, and on the 1 January 1991 appointed as Associate Professor in Physics. Professor Finlayson retired from the university in January 2007. During his time at Monash Finlayson played every season for the Monash Cricket Club (including his time as a PhD student), with the exception of the occasional interruption for an overseas study program. He has been closely involved in preserving the Monash Cricket Club records.
