She attended Melbourne Girls' Grammar School, before graduating from the University of Melbourne with a BA (Hons) in French and Latin in 1948. Maclean was awarded a MA from the University of Melbourne in 1971 with the thesis 'Le Grande Meaulnes d'Alain-Fournier: Etude structurale et thématique' (translated to Le Grande Meaulnes by Alain-Fournier: structural and thematic study).
Maclean joined Monash as a tutor in French in 1965. She later became a teaching fellow in 1973, a lecturer in 1976, a senior lecturer in 1986, and associate professor in 1988. She retired in early 1993 before being reappointed in late 1993 as a senior research fellow.
Maclean died in 1994
