It became the Department of Geography and Environmental Science in 1989 and then changed from a department to a school in 1999.
In 2014 the physical geography part of the school moved to the Faculty of Science, joining with geosciences and atmospheric sciences to create the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment in Science. As at 2024 Geography at Monash is split across the Faculties of Arts and Science with Human Geography sitting in the School of Social Sciences in Arts, and Geographical Science is under the School of Earth, Atmosphere and Environment in Science.
From the early 1960s the Geography department operated a photographic unit, providing an expert technical and promotional imaging unit to the School, Faculty of Arts and other business units of Monash University. Evidence of imaging services provided by geography is last seen on the website in 2010.
