Series identifierMON10Series titleRegister of student numbers, 1961-66Series descriptionFrom 1961 to 1966 all students were allocated an identification number consisting of a two digit year prefix for the year of first enrolment, and a single number obtained from the Register. The single number was derived alphabetically i.e. Each letter of the alphabet covered a range of numbers within the overall range 00001-99999 e.g. 'A' ranged from 00001 to 03120, 'G' from 30161 to 34489. As the number of students increased this method of allocating numbers became inadequate and inconsistent as appropriate spare numbers were not available. For the 1967 enrolments the system was changed in that although the number allocated still consisted of a year and single number it was not obtained from the Register. The number allocated by VUAC was used instead.
The Register consists of a folder of pages numbered 1 to 63. The papers are headed 'Student Numbers Table' and contain four columns of typed numbers. The name of the student allocated a particular number is handwritten beside the number. In some cases the year is included in brackets after the name. Not all numbers in each range are typed in the Register, with there being a standard gap of 8 between each number. In areas of heavy usage the omitted numbers are used and handwritten in the Register. Although the numbers are typed for example as 56, it is assumed to be read as 00056. Within each alphabetical range there was an attempt to keep the arrangement as lexicographical as possible i.e. The 'P' range of numbers will begin with 'Pa' names and end with those beginning 'Py'. However as spare numbers were used over the years it was impossible to keep strict order.Date range1966 - 1966Series typeUniversity SeriesLinear metreage0.09Extent (boxes)1Format, size, condition2 ring folder 350x245mmKeywordsClaytonStudents
