The private research project was conducted using the resources of Monash University's Centre for Human Bioethics. Initially entitled "Science, Medicine and Values" it was published in 1988 as "Conception in the Test Tube" and looked at the history of the in vitro fertilisation program in Melbourne between 1969-82, with emphasis on the function of values, ideals and aspirations. In the course of his research, Kannegiesser conducted interviews with doctors, scientists, nurses, social workers, patients and members of ethics committees. Items 1-36 are the taped interviews. Patient interviews are not included in this collection. The remainder of the material falls into two categories i.e. files of material on each member of the team interviewed, containing hand written transcripts of the interviews, supplementary questions, correspondence and often career information; and transcripts of the final chapters as vetted by the subjects with amendments and corrections. The final manuscript as sent to the publisher Macmillan in 1988, is also included in the collection. To protect privacy, certain records belonging to this series have been withheld by the author.
