As defined in university statute 5.5, duties of the sub-dean include advising students in relation to their courses and generally assisting the dean in the administrative work of the faculty. Following the faculty restructure to accommodate Frankston and Gippsland schools of education, the responsibilities of the Sub-Dean became those of the new Graduate Studies Adviser within the School of Graduate Studies.

The majority of papers in the series cover the period 1988-94. Papers which predate the series appear to have been transferred from an earlier series.
