MON670: Records related to the Special Entry Scheme
SERIES DETAILS
Series identifierMON670Series titleRecords related to the Special Entry SchemeSeries descriptionPrior to 1970 admission policies in many Australian universities allowed for the acceptance of applicants with reduced qualifications on an ad hoc basis, although provisions were vague and the numbers admitted small. In 1972 La Trobe University became the first university in Victoria to initiate a special entry scheme. At Monash twenty-six applicants were offered bursaries in January 1973, following which the introduction of federal government assistance to needy students (TEAS) made further bursaries unnecessary.
In August 1973 Council approved the introduction of a scheme modelled on that of La Trobe University, providing two admission categories for disadvantaged students ie. Category A "educationally disadvantaged" and Category B "early leavers". By 1977 the "A" Scheme was seen to be largely duplicating the VUSEB/VUAC Special Consideration Scheme. After negotiations between the university and the VUSEB (and later VISE) the Special Consideration Scheme was expanded to include consideration of long term educational disadvantage. The "A" Scheme was then discontinued, for a trial period in 1978 and permanently in 1980.
The "B" or Early Leavers Scheme subsequently became the Special Entry Scheme and was aimed at people not otherwise qualified to apply for admission who were able to show disadvantage. Through the 1970s and early 1980s numbers of applicants gradually declined and came to be largely concentrated in the faculties of Arts and Economics and Politics. The performance of those students accepted however was shown to be of a very high standard.
In 1988 a student recruitment centre was set up to administer the scheme which became the Mature Age Direct Entry Scheme and was open to candidates over twenty-three years of age. An "Alternative Year 12" Direct Entry Scheme was established for those candidates aged under twenty three years.
This series consists of records related to operation of the Special Entry scheme between 1974 and 1987 when it was managed by the Committee on Special Admissions. The records include lists of applicants and working papers of the Special Admissions Committee for 1978-86. Interest in the scheme expanded after 1988 to such an extent that it has not been considered practical by staff of the Course and Careers Centre to retain the bulk of paperwork involved.
