MON1379: Research and teaching papers
SERIES DETAILS
Series identifierMON1379Series titleResearch and teaching papersSeries descriptionThis series is comprised of research, teaching and administrative records of Professor Sue McKemmish from her appointment as a senior lecturer by Monash University’s School of Librarianship, Archives and Records in 1990 until her retirement in 2021.
Together with Dr Frank Upward, Dr Livia Iacovino and other colleagues, McKemmish developed and taught Monash’s undergraduate and postgraduate courses in archives and records. With Upward and others she developed and articulated a records continuum perspective and framework, and in her research and writing she has explored the implications of a continuum perspective for digital information environments, accountability mechanisms, individual and societal memory, rights in records and participatory recordkeeping. In 2004 she was appointed to the newly established Professorial Chair in Archival Systems. Throughout her academic career she took on several leadership roles including, at various times, Head of School of Information Management and Systems, Associate Dean (Research) and Associate Dean (Graduate Research) in the Faculty of Information Technology. She is a founder of the Centre for Organisational Social Informatics (COSI) and has been a chief investigator on numerous Australian Research Council research projects.
For a more extensive biography of Professor McKemmish, see Luciana Duranti and Patricia C Franks (eds), Encyclopedia of Archival Writers 1515 - 2015 (Rowman and Littlefield, 2019).
The records in this series were transferred to Monash University Archives from the Faculty of Information Technology in 2022, soon after Professor McKemmish’s retirement. Extensive records of her colleague, Dr Frank Upward, were transferred at around the same time and form series MON 1378: Research and Teaching Records (Dr Frank Upward).
A large portion of the records transferred to Monash Archives were publications gathered by Professor McKemmish, rather than her own scholarship. Many of these are accessible through academic libraries and have not been retained in this series. A small number of publications which are not readily available elsewhere have been retained, along with unpublished working papers and project management documents records arising from her leadership roles and her research projects, including
- SPIRT Recordkeeping Metadata
- Breast Cancer Knowledge Online
- Create once, use many times: The clever use of metadata in eGovernment and eBusiness recordkeeping processes in networked environments' (2003-2005)
- Trust and Technology: building archival systems for Indigenous oral memory (2003-2005)
All of these were collaborative project involving industry and academic partners. Accordingly McKemmish’s archive reflects the contribution of numerous other researchers.
This series is complemented by the records of Dr Frank Upward which are also held by Monash University Archives: see MON 1378, Research and Teaching Records (Dr Frank Upward).Date range1980 - 2021Series typePersonal PapersLinear metreage1.18Extent (boxes)6Format, size, conditionA4KeywordsFaculties & DepartmentsPersonal RecordsPublications
