The AGS provided reports to Australian and allied forces on topographic, geographic, hydrographic and anthropologic information on the South West Pacific Area (SWPA). The Terrain Studies in this collection contain text, diagrams, photographs and various sized coloured maps.

Formed in 1942 following directives from General Douglas MacArthur’s Headquarters, the Allied Geographical Section (AGS) gathered crucial geographical intelligence on the largely unmapped South-West Pacific Area (SWPA) during World War II. Running from 1942 to 1945, the AGS produced these highly detailed Terrain Studies—the section’s most comprehensive publications—combining specialised military analysis, text, diagrams, aerial photographs, and multi-coloured maps to support strategic operations across Oceania, the Malay Archipelago, and Japan.
