BAL identifies 3 "first printings" (ABC) and 2 "intermediate printings" (AB), and a "reprint" with some variant text setting. Of these, first printing A was issued in large- and small-paper formats (small ca. 17 cm., large ca. 19 cm), all others in large-paper only. All have the same Japanese colophon on the back cover. See BAL introduction to the Hearn entries for the bibliographical complexity of the Hearn Japanese fairy tales books
A comparison of copies of first printing A (small) and B indicates that the page images were photomechanically re-sized, with possible substitution of blocks and considerable variation in details of coloring.LanguageEnglish
