TitleSelf Cultivation: From East to WestDescriptionSelf-Cultivation from East to West (2026) explores humanity’s enduring search for meaning, wisdom and inner calm through Monash University Library’s Special Collections.

This collection showcases a selection of digitised items from the exhibition, featuring materials that reflect the histories and cross-cultural exchange of practices including Yoga, meditation, Zen and Tibetan Buddhism traditions. From 17th-century Tibetan manuscripts to 19th-century Kashmiri scrolls, these objects reveal diverse approaches to self-reflection, spiritual practice and the cultivation of the inner self.

The exhibition was proudly developed by Monash University Library.

Chakra scroll, Kashmir, 19th century. Detail from a Sanskrit hand-scroll manuscript depicting the chakras of the human body. The opening miniature shows Shiva united with Parvati on the 1000-petal lotus, representing the Sahasrara chakra at the crown of the skull. Illustrated with 15 miniatures illuminated with gold, the manuscript explores the connection between the human form, spirituality and the cosmos.
