D. Legge, to promote research on the area by staff and graduate students and encourage interdisciplinary cooperation in the departments of Anthropology and Sociology, Economics, Geography, History, Politics and Languages. In 1966 the centre was allocated its own budget and the Professorial Board appointed a Standing Committee, under the chairmanship of Professor Legge, to assist in its management.
In 1988 the centre became part of the new Institute for Contemporary Asian Studies. In 1992 ICAS was reorganised as the Monash Asia Institute and the Centre was formally wound up.
