In 1992, the Monash Asia Institute took over the role of the Institute of Contemporary Asian Studies.
The role of the Monash Asia Institute is to develop, to coordinate and to facilitate teaching, research and associated activities in Asian Studies throughout the University's faculties in order to continue to expand the University's reputation and range of expertise in an area vital to Australia's future, and to represent these interests in the policy-making forums of the University and Government.
The Monash Asia Institute consists of six research centres: (as of 2010)
Asia Pacific Health and Nutrition Centre (not a Centre of MAI since 2010)
China Research Centre (not a Centre of MAI since 2010)
Centre for Malaysian Studies (founded in 1993)
Centre of Southeast Asian Studies (founded in 1964
Japanese Studies Centre (founded in 1881)
National Centre for South Asian Studies (founded in 1992, absorbed by MAI in 2001)
