He was included in the membership of the university under Statute 3.5 of the Monash University (Amendment) Act 1964 with responsibility for "records, registers, muniments and accounts; secretarial work for boards and committees; management and supervision of exams; and editing of publications".
In 1964 the duties of the Registrar's Office were divided up into four sections - Academic, Accounts, Buildings and Staff. In 1965 these duties were divided between two new positions - Comptroller and Academic Registrar. The former Deputy Registrar, Mr J.D. Butchart, became Academic Registrar with the responsibility for academic records, academic boards and committees, management and supervision of exams, and editing of publications. These responsibilities were divided among four branches - Academic Branch, Filing Section, Publications Section and Student Services. Mr Butchart continued in this position - retitled Registrar in 1980 - until retiring in 1986. He was succeeded in 1987 by Mr A.L. Pritchard.
In 1993 after a major administrative reorganisation the positions of Registrar and Comptroller were reviewed and many of the functions of the Registrar were transferred to the Comptroller who became the university's General Manager. The Academic Registrar - Olwyn Cornelius - became director of the newly formed Academic Services Section, reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor. The position of Registrar was abolished in May 1997.
