He exercises a general superintendence over the educational and administrative affairs of the University and has the responsibility of maintaining discipline.
The Vice-Chancellor is 'ex officio' a member of every faculty and of all boards and committees within the university. Under the Monash University (Chisholm and Gippsland) Act 1990, the Vice-Chancellor's title was amended to 'Vice-Chancellor and President'.
